Sometimes a movie comes along with an all-star cast that promises to be truly special. You’d think that anything starring Ben Kingsley, Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Ackroyd and River Phoenix could not fail to be a slam dunk sensation, right? Well, anyone unfortunate to be subjected to the appalling 1992 wannabe thriller “Sneakers” could testify that such a stellar cast is no guarantee of a quality film. Between the overdramatised techno-pantomime plot with more holes in it than the Trump Administration’s foreign policy and the outrageous over-acting, trying desperately to salvage credibility for the gut-wrenchingly corny dialogue, it was 126 minutes of uncomfortable, squirm-in-your-seat banality.
There is one particularly excruciating scene in which Kingsley and Redford stand on a rooftop with eerie strobe lighting circling them. The maverick computer and espionage experts are arguing melodramatically over a hacking scheme that spiralled out of control, while an inexplicably soothing clarinet solo scores the background. At the climax, Kingsley, in an equally inexplicably silly shirt with buttons done all the way to the top yells at Redford in what may be the worst American accent in the history of cinema:
“There’s a war out there, old friend. A World War! And it’s not about who’s got the most bullets! It’s about who controls THE INFORMATION! What we see, hear, how we work, what we think; it’s ALL ABOUT THE INFORMATION!”
It Really IS All About the Information
As embarrassing as this scene is, for someone who lives and breathes business management software, there is a fair point to be made: Today’s business world is fraught with risks and hurdles. Complex supply chains and distribution networks, domestic and overseas regulatory mazes and intense competition fueled by globalisation pose stern challenges to any organisation. Wholesalers are frequently the meat in this sandwich. Wedged between pressurised suppliers struggling to eke out wafer-thin margins and customers facing unprecedented competition, life can be anything but simple. In such circumstances, having your finger on the pulse of the multitude of moving parts in your business is an essential, yet thorny proposition.
Breaking Down the Complexities
With so much happening day to day, minute to minute, the amount of data flowing into your business management systems is likely enormous and beyond the capacity of any manager to collate, analyze and interpret. Sure, many managers employ accounts staff and analysts to do that for them. However, the cost of maintaining staff purely for this purpose is beyond the capacity of most. One late delivery, one missed deadline or one picking error can be enough for a client to start looking elsewhere. Your wholesale and distribution business needs a way to process this data quickly, efficiently and accurately so that you have the right information at your fingertips to make fast, informed decisions.
Turning Data into Information
An expertly constructed and calibrated Business Intelligence dashboard can deliver just that. A BI Dashboard can sift through mountains of data and distil it into a handful of key metrics that tell managers exactly how their business is performing in key areas, in real time. On the flip side, get it wrong, and you may be missing out on vital insights that could be harnessed to drive efficiency gains and identify weaknesses in the chain that are detrimental to your performance and affecting your bottom line. The challenge lies in choosing the right partner with the most sophisticated BI software systems, and the experience and expertise to set up BI dashboards that reliably deliver what you need.
